Who is eligible to apply to The George Washington University Summer Scholars Pre-College Program?
The 10-day Mini-Course Program is open to current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. In rare cases, current 8th graders will be considered; however, additional application materials are required. To find out what they are, please contact the Summer Scholars office. The 6-week Pre-College Program is open to current 11th graders ONLY.
How many students participate in GW Summer Scholars?
Mini-courses are limited to 20 to 25 students per course. The 6-Week program will enroll approximately 40 to 50 students. Decisions are made on a rolling and space-available basis. Because of limited space availability, an early application is recommended.
How selective is admission to Summer Scholars?
Typically, students who have earned a B average or better in college prep courses are admitted to the program. Additionally, admission to the mini-courses is also based on a student's demonstrated interest in the subject, while admission decisions for the 6-Week programs are based on an evaluation of your academic record, recommendations, and personal statement.
May recommendations from more than one guidance counselor/teacher be sent?
Yes, though it is in no way necessary. The application requires a recommendation from a guidance counselor for the 10-day program, and a recommendation from a guidance counselor and teacher for the 6-Week program. However, if you would like to have additional recommendations submitted, you may.
Will attending Summer Scholars guarantee/improve admission chances to George Washington?
Admissions to Summer Scholars in no way implies admissions to GW. However, attending Summer Scholars will improve your chances of getting into colleges in general by strengthening the extracurricular portion of an application.
Is financial aid available?
Financial aid is available for the 6-Week program ONLY. Awards are partial and based on financial need, or in the case of the Einstein Summer Research Opportunity, on academic merit. For a full description of how to apply, please see Scholarship and Financial Aid Information under 6-Week program Tuition and Fees. The final deadline to apply for financial aid is April 15th.
I am an international student. Can I participate in the Summer Scholars Program and are there any additional requirements?
International Students are welcome to apply to both the 10-day Mini-Course Program and the 6-week Pre-College Program. Additional requirements include a minimum score on the TOEFL exam and an International Student Supplemental Form. For a full explanation of how to apply, please see the International Student Section of the Apply Now page.
What is a "typical day" like for a Summer Scholars student?
It depends on the day of the week and which program the student is in. Check out the 10-Day Mini-course Program or 6-week Pre-College Program Week-at-a-Glance sections to get a sense of what days at Summer Scholars are like.
For students in the 6-Week program, are there resources available to help with undergraduate classes?
Yes. Faculty keep regular office hours and are available to help you with your classes. Students are expected to take the initiative to meet with faculty regularly to discuss their progress. Advising support is also available from Summer Scholars staff. For students with physical or learning disabilities, Disability Support Services are also available at an extra cost.
