Ruth Wallace
Professor Emeritus of Sociology

Ruth Wallace has taught for 31 years at the George Washington University, where she has cultivated her interests in theory, gender, and religion. Professor Wallace is currently working on a book about Catholic parishes headed by married men, based on field notes and interviews she conducted throughout the U.S. during her 1996-1997 sabbatical year. In the past she served as president of the Association for the Sociology of Religion, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the District of Columbia Sociological Society, and as the chair of the theory section and of the religion section of the American Sociological Association. She is the recipient of several awards and honors: The American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for scholarly work on the role of women in society, the District of Columbia Sociological Society's Stuart Rice Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sociology, the Religious Research Association's H. Paul Douglass Lecturer, Marquette University's Joseph McGee Lecturer, and Santa Clara University's Distinguished Visiting Scholar.
