Background
Derek Willis currently works as a Research Database Editor for The Washington Post where his duties include obtaining and analying data for stories, maintenance of internal database searches, and database training. Prior to joining the Post in November of 2004, he was a writer and database analyst for The Center for Public Integrity. Willis was a staff writer for Congressional Quarterly between 1998 and 2003 where he covered House leadership, campaign finance and politics, and conducted CQ's annual vote studies. retired in July, 2003 as chief Washington correspondent of The New York Times, where he wrote on major issues in government and politics from privacy to campaign finance. He covered several city governments and worked on computer-assisted reporting projects as a staff writer for The Palm Beach Post between 1995 and 1998.

Willis has taught master's and undergraduate courses at American University's School of Communication and Columbia Union College in the areas of computer-assisted reporting. His journalism-related website, The Scoop, has been published since 1998.
