the university and its location

For those interested in media and public affairs, The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs is ideally situated. We are four short blocks from the White House and three from the State Department. Most major news organizations have operations within walking distance of the GW campus.

Students can reach almost anywhere in Washington in a few minutes via DC’s superb Metro service. GW has its own stop on the Metro Blue Line, aka the Power Line, linking Washington’s National Airport, the Pentagon, the K-Street lobby and think tank corridor, the National Mall, and Capitol Hill.

In practical terms, this means our students can:

• Choose from hundreds of jobs and internships while studying at GW.

• Meet and hear from prominent figures in government, public affairs and media through lecture series and talks sponsored by the School. Recent examples include then-White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, senate candidate Al Franken, ABC Correspondent George Stephanapoulos, and Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, among many others. On most days, too, students can hear a leader in politics, government, public policy or communication giving an open lecture at GW.

• Connect to extraordinary networks of influential players in national media and public affairs.

• Capitalize on research opportunities afforded by proximity to all the above.

Our uniquely propitious location also helps GW attract part-time faculty with eminent professional accomplishments in political and international communication, journalism, government, and the private sector. This, along with the highly engaged permanent faculty, enables our master’s students to draw on an unusually diverse array of courses and mentors for specialized study relevant to media and public affairs.
