НОВЫЕ СЛОВА ИЗ СТАРЫХ
This segment contains many new words based on old roots. Using the
information below try to figure these out.
Greek diphthongs: The combinations au and eu
in Greek-derived words come out in Russian as ав and ев.
You have already seen автор, автобус,
and Евгений (~Eugene).
"Hot" Ж words. Many words whose roots begin with
ж have to do with heat. You have already seen жарко
(and, by analogy, жар - 'fever'). There's also пожар - 'fire',
жечь/сжечь - 'to set ablaze,' поджог - 'arson.'
"Fractured" -лом- words. You've already seen ломать/сломать
(ногу).
В настоящий момент. When Dr. Kovalevsky tells
you what he is doing в настоящий момент, he's
not referring to "real time." Yes, настоящий means
'real' or 'actual' (Ты стал настоящим спортсменом!), but it
also means 'actual' in the Romance-language sense. If you know French
or Spanish, you know that actual and actuel mean 'present'
or 'current.' That's why the Russian phrase for 'present tense' is
настоящее время, and why в настоящий момент is a commonly
used synonym for сейчас.
"Halfway" пол and полу words. In this video,
you saw пол-ложки and полмиллиона (with
an extra у in the declined form: около получмиллиона).
Death and destruction. Look at these roots and the words they
generate:
- гиб - perishing: гибнуть/погибнуть: он погиб, она погибла
- зем - earth; land: планета Земля; землетрясение
- мер - death: умирать/умереть (умру, умрёшь, умрут,
умер, умерла, умерли); смерть - death

(человек, который всегда пьян)
