КОРНИ
РУССКИХ СЛОВ
By now you have seen
that Russian words are often made up of familiar roots. Consider these
"new" vocabulary items.
держа́ть
(держу́, де́ржишь, де́ржат, держа́ла)
- to hold; держа́ - while
holding. The root держ often
acts like the English root
-tain:
заде́рживать /
задержа́ть
- to detain
подде́рживать
/ поддержа́ть
- to support; to sustain
возде́рживаться
/ воздержа́ться
- to refrain
допоздна́ < до
+ поздно = until the wee
hours
ку́шать
(ку́шаю)
- to eat cf. вку́сно - tasty. Note
that ку́шать is
commonly used but very conversational. Non-fluent speakers are urged to
stick with есть
(ем, ешь, ест, еди́м, еди́те,
едя́т) until
they have a good feel for the appropriateness of ку́шать.
одновре́менно
(also одновреме́нно) < одно + время
= simultaneously
предлага́ть < пред
- before + лаг
- lay = propose; offer
пригласи́ть < при
- arrival; approaching + глас
- voice = invite (voicing
that one should come over). Compare
with согла́сен
- agree, i.e.
with the [same] voice.
расходи́ться
- to disperse; the
prefix рас- often
corresponds to English dis-.
чей-нибудь
- someone's < чей
- whose + нибудь
