Past tense verbal adverbs

Russian has a category of adverbs made from verbs (verbal adverbs). The examples you see here are past-tense verbal adverbs, which are always made from perfective verbs. Used almost exclusively in writing, past-tense verbal adverbs are usually translated as "having done" or "after doing" something:

Набрав номер телефона, вы услышите гудок.
After dialing the number, you will hear a tone.

Сообщив оператору свой персональный код, вы сможете соединиться с нужным Вам абонентом.
After reporting your PIN to the operator you can be connected to your party you need.

Formation. Most past-tense verbal adverbs are made from the perfective past tense: replace the final -л with -в. There are no endings for gender. (Adverbs are genderless!): сказав - having said; подумав - having thought; купив - having bought, etc. Reflexive verbs add -вшись: родившись - having been born; дозвонившись - having gotten through on the phone. Some verbs with past tenses that do not come from the infinitive, such as пришёл, have an entirely different formation, based on the они-form of the future tense: -ут is replaced with -я: придя - having arrived.
