SITA Faculty

A professor of Fine Arts, Dr. Venkatraman has taught Hinduism and mythology courses for SITA since its inception. In addition to classroom teaching, he also accompanies students on many excursions within and outside of Madurai.

SITA's Indian Literature course instructors, Dr. Premila Paul and Professor Nair, are both from the English department at American College in Madurai. Dr. Paul has been with SITA since 1990, and she has also taught at Oberlin and Gettysburg Colleges in the U.S.

Dr. Vidya, who teaches the Socio-Political Issues course and supervises second-semester NGO internships, has academic interests in social justice and peace studies. She has studied at the University of Notre Dame and has taught at American College and with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Arun Raja Selvan has taught SITA language classes since 1994. In addition to teaching Tamil, he is SITA's Program Coordinator in Madurai.

Dr. Christiana Singh, who teaches the ‘Environment Issues in South India’ course since fall 2009, has a PhD in Economics from Madurai Kamaraj University. Her academic interests include gender and fertility studies in South India.

Experts on various topics serve as guest lecturers throughout the semester, among them a renowned archaeologist, a Gandhian philosophy specialist, a Dalit professor who shares experiences of caste discrimination, a human rights lawyer, and a women's rights activist.
