Joint Security Area was released in 2000 and has won the Blue Dragon Award and the Grand Bell Award in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The film takes place in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, where North and South Korean soldiers address their conflicted loyalties to their own state and to their fellow nation of Koreans. The film also discusses the possibility of neutrality for North and South Korean citizens, as well as possible difficulties in reconciliation.
Lt. Colonel Shin is a Political Science Ph.D candidate at Kyungpook National University and currently a visiting scholar at the Sigur Center for Asian Studies. His research project seeks to answer the question ""How does North Korea as a Weak State Negotiate with a Strong State?" He holds an M.A. in Political Science from Seoul National University.
