SEES Program (New Orleans) Planning Committee, June 28, 1998, 8:00-9:00 a.m.

Present: Tatiana G. Barr (Columbia U), Diana Greene (NYU), Stephen D. Corrsin (Columbia U), Gordon Anderson (U of Kansas), Inna Gudanets (Stanford), Richard Fitzsimmons, Secretary (Penn State)

Tatiana G. Barr, chair, convened the meeting at 8:10 a.m. An Agenda was distributed.

A motion to approve the Minutes of the New Orleans, January 11, 1998 was made by Gordon Anderson, seconded by Diana Greene; unanimously approved.

Tatiana G. Barr advanced proposals for the 1999 annual conference program in New Orleans. The tentative program title is, "The Impact of American Librarianship on Libraries of Post-Communist Russia, Eastern and Central Europe, and The Balkans in the 1990s." Present thought is three speakers followed by a discussant. Possibilities for the three speakers are:
Plan # 1 A) Marianna Tax Choldin, but she can't attend on Sunday; committee felt it wanted to stay with Sunday program and that it did not want her paper read by someone else, and asked Tatiana to re-contact Marianna and see if her schedule frees-up. Marianna understands if we select someone else.
B) Michael Neubert; money might be a problem and the Library of Congress is not very supportive.
C) Beau David Chase (Ohio State U) is doing solid work and has a good perspective.
D) Tanya Lorkavitch has worked on a few IREX programs-not always in St. Petersburg or Moscow; she is an ALA member; Gordon Anderson will contact her if the committee wishes. If not a speaker, she'd be an excellent discussant
E) Possibly Laila Bevezovic (Washington State U); good Croation perspective Gordon Anderson will supply information.
F) Galina Kislovskaya would be an excellent choice

Plan # 2 A) Richard Quandt (Princeton)
B) Marek Sroka (U of Illinois)
C)Tetiana Bugasova (Kiev Mohyla Academy, Kiev);
D) Patricia Thurston
E) Laila Bevezovic

Need to secure third, female speaker. Perhaps Janet Crayne. Janet is very active in rebuilding Sarajevo libraries, and would be more specific than Marianna Tax Choldin.

There was no further discussion. The meeting adjourned by unanimous consent.
