Preservation Committee Minutes
Jan. 13, 2001

Present: Brad Schaffner (Kansas), Mischa Buczkowski (Oregon), Jackie Byrd (Indiana), Diana Greene (NYU), Inna Gudanets (Stanford), Nicoletta Hary (Dayton), Jared Ingersoll (Columbia), Tim Larson (Indiana), David Lowe (Columbia), Cathy Zeljak (George Washington)

The minutes of the July 2000 meeting were approved.

Brad Schaffner distributed print copies of the Preservation Committee website. More links will be added.

Several people presented updates on preservation work currently being done at their respective institutions:

  • Columbia is winding up a year of an NEH project to microfilm Slavic pamphlets. It is hoped that funding will be renewed. Other libraries can buy copies of the microfilm. The project involves brittle Slavic pamphlets, 80% of which are in Russian.
  • New York University is having some of their Slavic materials deacidified as part of a project of the New York Public Library.
  • Indiana University has Slavic materials included in its deacidification and digitization preservation projects
The San Francisco Conference was discussed. It was decided to have Andy Spencer do a presentation on the Indiana project to digitize 20 years of Letopis' zhurna'lnykh statei and a presentation on deacidification at the conference. The Preservation and Electronic Resources Committees will have a joint meeting at the San Francisco Conference.
