Joint Meeting
Electronic Resources & Preservation Committees
Minutes
January 25, 2003

Present: Brad Schaffner (Kansas), Cathy Zeljak (George Washington), Mischa Buczkowski (Oregon), Jackie Byrd (Indiana), Diana Greene (NYU), Inna Gudanets (Stanford), Jared Ingersoll (Columbia), Soobum Kim (Stanford), Karen Kohn (no affiliation), Tim Larson (Indiana), Sandra Levy (Chicago), Irina Lynden (JSTOR/Brown), Terri Miller (Michigan State), Anthony Oddo (Yale), Mary Jane Petrowski (ACRL), Susan Summer (Columbia), Patricia Thurston (Yale),

Minutes: The minutes of the June 2002 meeting were approved, with the correction of Soobum Kim's name.

Summer Program Proposal: The Electronic Resources and Preservation Committees are planning a presentation about the Nikita Krushchev Audio Archive, currently comprised of over 300 hours of tape. Michael Haumesser, Irina Lynden, and Allynn Wilkinson, all from Brown University, will give a one-hour presentation at the Toronto ALA Annual conference.

Review of Website: Providing an archive of SEES officers on the SEES website was discussed. Sandra Levy will look through the box of archives to create a list. Mary Jane Petrowski suggested using the ACRL archives for information, too. It was decided that the meeting minutes should be posted to the website soon after the meetings. Jackie Byrd will send the minutes to Cathy Zeljak for posting after the committee chairs have approved them.

Mary Jane reported that ACRL are now offering to hose the websites of sections on its server. Some discussion about what would display for websites not on the ACRL server took place, e.g. a new window open or a "pop up". Websites not on the ACRL server would not be able to be searched by the ACRL search engine. There were questions about having multiple people responsible for maintaining websites on the ACRL server. It was decided that we would wait to make this decision.

Projects:

  • Jackie Byrd reported that the Slavic Librarians Directory has been updated following a discussion on Slavlibs
  • Alan Urbanic is developing a Guide to North American Slavic Collections
  • Electronic Resources and Preservation Committees will do follow up to JSTOR's request for suggestions for Slavic serials to digitize. It was hoped that the B&D Committee at AAASS would be more interested in the project.
  • Brad Schaffner reported on a TIFA Title VI grant for the University of Kansas for digitizing Saratov archives related to "Germans in Russia". Kansas is partnering with East View on the project.
