Continuing Education Committee Minutes
June 16, 2002

Present: Inna Gudanets (Stanford), Mariya Barash (Wayne State), Mischa Buczkowski (Oregon), Jackie Byrd (Indiana), Joanna Dyla (Stanford), Jared Ingersoll (Columbia), Soobum Kim (Stanford), Tim Larson (Indiana), Sandra Levy (Chicago), Karina Milosovich (East View), Janice Pilch (Illinois), Kay Sinnema (Duke), Andy Spencer (Wisconsin), Marek Sroka (Illinois), Lydia Wasylenko (Syracuse), Cathy Zeljak (George Washington)

Minutes: The minutes of the January 2002 meeting were approved.

Mentoring project: The letters to the directors of institutes and to library schools regarding the mentoring project were sent in late March, based on an updated list of directors, schools, institutes, etc. The work was done by Tatiana Barr, Inna Gudanets, Grazyna Slanda, and Marek Sroka. The feedback thus far included information requests on the Slavic Librarians' Workshop. The impact on SEES membership is still not known. The letters will be sent again at the beginning of the Fall Semester and then again in the Spring. It was suggested that the SEES Home Page provide a link to the list of directors, schools, etc.

Continuing Education Committee WebPage: Inna Gudanets led a discussion on the development of a webpage for the committee. Tatiana Barr has offered to create and support the website. Some ideas for inclusion on the website included:

  • The list of directors, schools, etc.
  • Information on retrospective projects
  • Library profiles from the SEES Newsletter
  • List of mentors or a link on how to get information
  • Report from the Slavic Librarians' Workshop
It was suggested that the website start small and then grow with need. Slavic NACO funnel: Joanna Dyla reported on her work on a Slavic NACO funnel. The responses to an email that she posted on slavlibs identified only 2 libraries interested in the program. Joanna felt that at least 6 libraries were needed. Some ideas for promoting the funnel were:
  • Advertise further
  • Suggest it at the Slavic Cataloging Workshop session on authorities
  • Post an email on the PCC and Autocat listservs
Report on Karen Rondestvedt's trip to Russia for the 7th Annual Meeting of the Russian Library Association, IAroslavl, May 13-18, 2002: Inna read Karen's report on the conference.

New Projects: The ideas for new projects included:

  • Gear some of the projects towards our own continuing education
  • Have the committee serve as a conduit for information
  • Have reports from the AAASS meetings
