The Center for Excellence in Municipal Management (CEMM) was created in 1997 to assist the District of Columbia -- and eventually all cities -- in improving the quality of its services. Supported by the Washington area business and foundation community, the CEMM trains DC's senior managers and executives in best practices, public and business management techniques, conducts practical research on the City's critical management issues, and offers expert advice to the City on the basis of that research.

The Center for Latin American Issues was authorized to begin operations in November
1998. The center's principal objectives are: 1) To help expand the University's
Latin American Program; 2) To stimulate the preparation of scholarly publications
and articles on Latin America; 3) To conduct educational training programs that
utilize the unique resources of the University and other institutions in Washington
D.C.; 4) To encourage debate on major political, economic, and social issues
affecting Latin America and Latin American-United States Relations. CLAI was
chartered in 2001 for four years.

The European Union Research Center is housed in the Institute for Global Management and
Reserach (IGMR). Its primary mission is to pursue multidisciplinary policy-based research
focusing on the economic, political, and social issues of the European Union (EU),
especially on the interaction of public and private sectors and its implications for
management worldwide. In addition to research, the EU Research Center also
will promote policy dialogue.
International Institute of Tourism Studies

The International Institute of Tourism Studies (IITS) attracts scholars and professionals
from around the globe, creating unique opportunities for long-term educational, research
and consulting alliances. IITS analyzes tourism policy using the resources of the
University and Washington metropolitan area. The faculty
associated with IITS are actively engaged in sponsored research and development on
projects that focus on policy formation, administration and communication strategies
related to ecotourism, health tourism, conference and exposition operations, and visitor
destination development/revitalization. IITS was re-chartered in 2000 for
four years.
Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis
Chartered in 2000, the Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis supports original research and educational programs about real estate and urban residential, development, and commercial properties. The Center focuses in the real estate and development of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area and the District of Columbia. The Center also supports research about global housing and economic development as it relates to real estate, urban land use, and provision of housing. The Center’s research and educational efforts are sponsored by the University, the School, the finance department and partners in the community including: The Mortgage Bankers Association, the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, the National Association of Realtors, Oliver T. Carr, Jr. and Companies, National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, and the Fannie Mae Foundation.

The Council for Family Enterprise hosts round table discussions, workshops, executive
development programs, exchange and networking opportunities and other services to foster a
rich learning experience for family-owned firms. CFE also conducts research on issues
affecting family owned businesses. CFE sponsors include the Stemplar Foundation, Employee
Benefits of America, the National Insurance Corporation and McGuire, Woods, Battle &
Boothe.

The Research Program in Social and Organizational Learning conducts research, hosts visiting scholars, organizes conferences and seminars, offers training programs, and manages discussion groups on the Internet. The Research Program uses the methods of continuous quality improvement and contributes to the development of the fields of systems theory and cybernetics.
