International Students

There are two additional requirements for International Students:

  1. Financial Certificate (International Applicants)

Both sides of the form must be completed and submitted along with other application materials. An application will not be considered complete until the Financial Certificate and the necessary verification documents have been received by the Doctoral Office.

  2. English Language Requirement

Graduates of foreign universities (except those in the United Kingdom, the English-speaking provinces of Canada, or Australia) must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language

(TOEFL--Institutional Code 5246, Department Code 02) and obtain a satisfactory score to be considered for admission. The Test of Written English (TWE) is strongly recommended. Satisfactory TOEFL and TWE scores are defined as follows:

    • 600 or above (paper exam), 250 or above (computer exam) , and a score of 5 out of 6 on the TWE: The applicant requires no special English language training and may begin academic coursework directly if admitted to the program.

    • Less than criterion (a) above: The applicant is required to take the George Washington University English Placement Examination subsequent to admission and may be required to include a course in English for International Students in the first part of the academic program.

    • Below 550: The applicant will not be admitted.
