Running Routes
(all routes depart and finish in Foggy Bottom, at GWU Building K, 817 23rd St. NW, DC.) Note that these distances are approximations and may be slightly more or less

Lincoln Memorial

Run down 23rd street past the State Department to Lincoln. Run in front of the memorial and then follow the sidewalk that goes directly around the back. Follow the circle and head back up 23rd Street.
2.5 Miles
Key Bridge

Run down H St. to Virginia Avenue. Right on Virginia Ave. Cross Rock Creek Parkway and go into drive where Thompson Boat House sign is. Take a right at the river and run along the boardwalk. Keep going straight, following the river until the path leads you to Water Street. Follow Water Street until you are underneath Key Bridge. Turn here and follow same route back.

Along River Path

Run down H St. to Virginia Avenue. Right on Virginia Ave. Cross Rock Creek Parkway and turn left on path. You are now behind the Watergate Complex and along the river. Follow this path until the stairs that lead down to the river (By the golden horse statues) and turn around, follow the same route back.
***Variation for a shorter return is to turn left at the horse statues, and run back up 23rd street.

Washington Monument

Run Down 23rd Street to Constitution. Left on Constitution. Right on 14th Street. Right on Independence Avenue, following path around Washington Memorial. Right on 17th Street (in front of WWII). Left on Constitution. Right up 23rd.

Reflecting Pool

H street to Virginia Ave. Right on Virginia. Cross Rock Creek Pkwy. Left on river path. Left at Lincoln Memorial and into Mall area. Circle the Reflecting Pool either way, going around the front of WWII memorial. Back to Lincoln and follow same river path back to GW.

Capital Crescent Trail

Run down H St. to Virginia Avenue. Right on Virginia Ave. Cross Rock Creek Parkway and go into drive where Thompson Boat House sign is. Take a right at the river and run along the boardwalk. Keep going straight, following the river until the path leads you to Water Street. Follow Water Street until you are underneath Key Bridge. Keep on going about another 50 yards, where you will reach the start of the Capital Crescent Trail. Run about a half mile on the Crescent trail. Turn around when you get to the circular tunnel on the right(this tunnel leads to the start of the Glover Archibald Trail-never go alone). Follow same route back.

Tidal Basin and FDR Memorial

Run down 23rd to Constitution. Left on Constitution. Right on 17th.(Run down on the left side of the street) Follow sidewalk which turns left when you get to the opposite side of the Mall. After about 50m turn right and cross three roads until you get to the Tidal Basin. Circle the Tidal Basin either way. On the right side of the Tidal Basin is the FDR memorial. Walk through it (do not run through it), or stay along the path that goes along the Tidal Basin. Follow the circle passing in front of Jefferson Memorial, and stay along the water's edge. When you have completed the circle, cross back over the 3 roads, up 17th street, Left on Constitution, and Right up 23rd.

Bridge Loop (Memorial to Key)

Run down H St. to Virginia Avenue. Right on Virginia Ave. Cross Rock Creek Parkway and go Left down River path behind Watergate and Kennedy Center. Follow path, and turn right on Memorial Bridge. Cross Bridge and veer right at the end of it. Follow dirt trail down to river path. (***Note that it can be quite difficult and sometimes dangerous to cross these roads during busy times of the day***). Turn Left on the path along river. Follow path. You will cross a wooden bridge path. Keep going straight along this wooden path. (DO NOT TURN LEFT at the stop sign). Follow through the Teddy Roosevelt Island parking lot and up bridge that crosses over the highway. This path will lead you up a little hill. At intersection at top of hill (Marriott in front of you), turn right and cross Key Bridge. Immediately at the end of Key Bridge turn right and go down the hill to some stairs and cross the Canal. Turn Left and there will be some more stairs leading down to Water Street. Take these stairs and run back to GW along river, following the path that that goes by the boathouse and back up Virginia Avenue.

Mall Tour

Run Down 23rd street to Constitution. Left on Constitution, passing Const. Gardens on right. Continue past Washington Monument. Cut a right up the path that leads to Madison Drive (path along the Mall). Follow this path all the way to the Capital, circling around the Captial reflecting pool and returning down the Mall on the opposite side.(Jefferson Drive).
***NOTE THAT IT IS APPROX. 5 MILES TO RUN ALL THE WAY AROUND THE MALL***

WWII Memorial and Iwo Jima

Dep Bldg K and turn left G St NW to 17th St.
Turn right down 17th St passing DAR Constitution Hall (1 Mi)
Cross Constitution to WW II Memorial - turn right and WALK thru memorial to path along reflecting pool. Go to Lincoln Memorial. (2 Mi)
Then left around circle and cross Memorial Br.
Go straight ahead on road entering Arlington Cemetery pass Seabee Memorial and Metro entrance.
Then circle to right on roadway leading down to Rt 110. (3 Mi)
Turn left on Rt 110 along Arl Cem fence. This is the final half-mile of the Marine Corps marathon.
Take first left and run uphill to the Netherlands Carillon.
Turn right at and follow foot path in front of Carillon to Iwo Jima Memorial. Then run up short hill to left to road above Iwo Jima.
Follow this road over Rt 50 and into Rosslyn. Stay to your right and you'll be on Ft Meyer Drive to Key Bridge. (Mi 4.5)
Cross Key Bridge and go down to Water St and then to pathway beside Potomac River. Back to Thompson Boat House, Virginia Ave to Bldg K. (6 Mi)

Mall Museum Tour

Bldg K down 23rd St to Virginia Ave. Cross Virginia Ave and turn left to 19th St. Turn right to Constitution Ave. Cross Constitution and head towards Capital. Cross 14th St and turn right to Mall. Follow Madison Ave to 3rd St. Run up to Peace Monument in front of Capital and up hill with Capital on your right. Go to 1st St NE and turn left pass Supreme Court and Library of Congress. Head back down hill with Capital on your right and return to the Mall. Follow Jefferson in front of new Native American Museum, pass Air Space on to Dept Ag. Turn right on 14th St and return to Constitution. Follow Constitution all way back to 23rd St. Take 23rd St back to Bldg K (7 miles)

Tour Haines Point

GW/Bldg K follow 23rd St cross Constitution to Lincoln.
Go to left around Lincoln passing in front of Lincoln then take 2nd left and head downhill
crossing Independence Ave.
Run down Ohio Drive, Cross Outlet Bridge and follow Ohio Drive along Potomac passing under 14th st/metro bridges.
to Pass Park Police HQs on your right and arrive Buck Eye Drive (MILE 2)
Continue straight and pass first round rest room on left and keep on.
National Airport across Potomac on your right.
Pass second round rest room on left (MILE 3)
Continue ALL the way to bottom of Haines Point and arrive at AWAKENING (MILE 3.5)
Continue on around Haines Point golf course will be on your left.
Continue up Haines Point - Almost to end of Ft McNair to right (MILE 4)
Pass road leading into Golf Course Club House (MILE 4.7) and Maine Ave Fish Market to your right.
Arrive Buck Eye Drive (MILE 5)
Turn left and follow Buck Eye Drive back to Ohio Drive. Turn right on Ohio Drive and head back cross Outlet Bridge and continue up Ohio Drive along Potomac.
Continue back to Independence Ave. Do not go back up to Lincoln, head to left and follow along Potomac River under Memorial Bridge, pass by "Beach Volleyball Courts".
Continue under Roosevelt Bridge, pass Kennedy Center, Watergate.
Arrive Virginia Ave and run up Virginia Ave back to Bldg K (MILE 8)

C & O Canal

Bldg K down Va Ave, Waterfront to Key Bridge. Up to Tow Path. Out tow path and pass under Chain Bridge. After Chain Bridge run 3-4 more minutes and turn around. Return to Bldg K. (9 miles)

Rock Creek Park Beyond Pierce Mill

*******ROUTE INFO*********
This run follows the Rock Creek Trail out to and beyond Pierce Mill. The trail may seem a bit hard to follow at times. It splits and turns and crosses back and forth over Rock Creek several times. The key to staying on the right trail is simple. The trail is a PAVED bike trail all the way. The trail follows along the creek all the way. When you come to any intersection, choose the Paved Trail. And stay with the paved trail that follows along the creek. It you are running on dirt or grass at any time then you are LOST. Go back to the paved trail. It is a very pretty run - you will see herons and ducks all along the creek. Beyond the National Zoo you will frequently see deer grazing - they are very tame. Also plenty of small chipmunks if you keep eyes open for them on the trail. And lots of different birds.

From Bldg K down Virginia Ave to Rock Creek Parkway. Cross parkway (caution - with the light) and turn right and head out along the Rock Creek Parkway.
Pass under several bridges and then trail moves away from Parkway and along creek.
Pass Oak Hill cemetery and first exercise area.
Pass under Mass Ave Bridge (Mile 2)
Follow trail and run up hill to Shoreham Drive. Watch for cars - careful.
Cross Shoreham Drive and follow trail downhill and back along Parkway.
Approach tunnel - parkway goes thru tunnel. Trail goes to left at tunnel entrance.
Do not go in tunnel. Follow trail that runs along creek.
Pass picnic area, tables, and then paved road leading into rear of National Zoo.
(Mile 3)
Continue on trail and it goes back and continues along Parkway.
Pass lower main entrance to National Zoo.
Trail continues along creek past zoo grounds.
Run across wooden bridge and see several roads. Follow trail along creek and pass under low bridge (Mile 4).
Pass signs point to DIRT trail to Pierce Mill. Do not go on DIRT trail. Follow paved trail across small bridge and along creek.
Come to big open picnic area - rest rooms to left.
Continue along trail along creek.
Pass under bridge and see nice waterfall.
Continue and pass thru Pierce Mill picnic area - restrooms on left.
Continue on trail another ¼ mile to parking lot. Go thru parking lot to STOP sign.
(Mile 5) Stretch a bit on fence by STOP sign and then head back to GW by same route.

Two Bridges, Spout Run, Iwo Jima, Haines Point

Bldg K down Virginia Ave to Crew Boat House and Waterfront.
Pass Wash Harbor and follow path along river to just before Key Bridge. (1 Mi)
Cross Water St and up hill to C&O Canal Tow Path. Cross over Canal to Key Bridge.
Cross Key Bridge to Roslyn and follow Lee Hiway uphill passing Marriot. Climb to top long hill.
Then cross over I66 and follow along Lee Hiway (Do NOT take bike trail to right, stay straight ahead on sidewalk along Lee Hiway.
Follow Lee Hiway to Spout Run. Strip Mall with CVS, Giant etc. Run to front of Giant. (2.5 Mi)
Look to right of Giant and see path up to bike trail. Go up to Bike Trail and head to right back to Roslyn. Pass Marriot again and continue down to Ft Meyer Drive. (4.2 Mi)
Turn right on Ft Meyer Drive to Iwo Jima Memorial. (Portajons and Water fountain.) (4.4 Mi)
Follow path to Netherlands Carrillion and to road beside Arlington Cemetery.
Run down hill to Rt 110 and follow bike path to right along Arl Cemetary.
Bike Path will curve off to right from Rt 110 to main road to Mem Bridge. Turn left and head towards Mem Bridge. Go to your right around big circle, cross Rt 27 (Mi 5.2)
Head right along Potomac on Mt Vernon Trail to 14th St Bridge. (Mi 6.4)
Cross 14th St Bridge. Immediately at DC end of Bridge take stairs on your left, (Mi 6.8)
Go down stairs to Ohio Drive and head towards Haines Point to Buckeye Dr. Turn around at ‘ALL WAY STOP” sign on Buckeye Drive. (Mi 7.2)
Head back up Ohio Drive. Cross Inlet Bridge and continue on along river towards Lincoln Mem.
Do NOT run up to Lincoln, stay along river and pass Volley Ball Courts, under Roosevelt Bridge, pass Kennedy Center to Virginia Ave and back to Bldg K (10 miles).

Bldg K down 23rd St cross Constitution direct to Lincoln.
Bear left at Lincoln and then left down Henry Bacon Drive to Constitution.
Turn right on Constitution to 14th St and right on 14th to Madison.
Left on Madison and straight down Mall to 4th St NW.
Left on 4th to Penn Ave and right on Penn Ave and run to Capital.
James A Garfield statue in front of Capital at 1st St NW. Left on 1st and
Cross Constitution Ave to Louisiana Ave. Right on Louisiana to Union Station.
Go to right around circle in front of Union Station to right turn on 1st NE.
Follow 1st St up hill to pass Supreme Court. Turn left on East Capital and run all the way
Out and around RFK. Back on same route and return to take 1st St SE pass Library of Congress. Cross Independence down hill on 1st to right on C St. Follow C St pass
Rayburn Bldg to right on Wash Ave at Guard Station. Wash Ave to left on Independence.
Follow Independence and go right on 7th to Mall and left on Jefferson. Run towards Wash Monument. Cross 14th and head left back up to Independence. Follow Independence Ave to 17th St. Turn right on 17th to WWII Memorial. Cross 17th and take path on south side of WWII Mem - it comes out along Reflecting Pool back to Lincoln. From Lincoln to 23rd St and Bldg K.

Mass Ave to Bethesda and Crescent Trail Back to DC

Dep Bldg K run north on 23rd St NW to Florida Ave and 22nd St to Mass Ave.
Turn left on Mass Ave and pass National Observatory (Mi 2) Stop to visit with VP and see if he has any "nice, encouraging words for you". Cross Wisc Ave (Mi 2.7)
Pass Nebraska Ave and American Univ (Mi 3.6)
Enter Maryland (Mi 4.5)
Pass Little Falls Parkway on right. Go about 150 meters and see Crescent Trail Bridge over Mass Ave. Turn left and run up to join Crescent Trail. (Mi 5.5)
Follow Crescent Trail back to GW via Fletchers Boat House.
Arrive Bldg K (12 Mi)

Marine Corps Marathon Rehearsal
The Mall and Haines Point
Dep Bldg K down 23rd St to Constitution. Cross Constitution and head east towards the Capital. Follow the Marine Corps Marathon Route down Constitution, up and along Mall, to Union Station, behind the Capital passing Supreme Court and Library of Congress, down Independence Ave and back to the Mall, and on to Lincoln Memorial and Ohio Drive. Down Ohio Drive along the Potomac River to the Awakening at the bottom of Haines Point. Back up the inside of Haines Point and then return via Buckeye Drive back to GW. C&O Canal
-Bldg K down Virginia Ave to Crew Boat House pass Wash Harbor along river front to Key Bridge. Climb up stairs to C & O Canal Tow Path.
-Run out tow path passing Fletchers Boat House, Chain Bridge and on to Mile Marker 6. You will find Mile Marker Six about ½ mile after LOCK 6. Pls note the difference. You need to go to Mile Marker Six to get the run distance today. You’ll see the large dam in the river to your left when you get there.
-Turn and return back to Bldg K by the same route.

Memorial Bridge to Chain Bridge and Tow Path Return
GW down Virginia Ave to Rock Creek Parkway. Cross and turn left and run past Kennedy Center to Memorial Bridge
Across Memorial Bridge, leave DC and enter VA.
***Then down to river and Mt Vernon Trail north. Pass Roosevelt Island Up to Rosslyn, pass Marriott Hotel (restrooms) and follow Lee Highway up first long hill
Cross Route 66 bridge and take Custis Trail to Spout Run
***Sharp turn off Custis trail into Giant parking lot
Run under bridge you just ran over and sharp left turn on bike trail to Lorcom Lane.
Run up hill along Lorcom Lane (stay on sidewalk on right side of road)
***Right turn on Nellie Custis Dr. and run uphill again!
Right turn on Military Road and run down Military Road.
Several big hills - pass Quincy St ***Go all the way to end of Military Road and onto Old Glebe Road and across bridge, then turn right on Richmond Rd and down hill about 30 yds and turn left on Randolph St.
Follow N. Randolph about 100 yds and see BIKE TRAIL sign
Take it downhill to right. You come out at Chain Bridge. (Portajon here)
Watch for traffic – BE CAREFUL CROSSING Glebe Road to Bridge.
Take LEFT side of Chain Bridge and cross Potomac River to Maryland.
***Just before end of bridge follow stairs on your left down to towpath of C & O Canal.
Run downriver along towpath and pass under Crescent Trail Bridge
You enter back in DC here. Continue down towpath to Fletchers Boat House.
Continue down towpath to Key Bridge Return via waterfront, boathouse, Va Ave to Bldg K.

16th Street Churches, Tennis Staadium Rock Creek Park

Dep Bldg K and north on 23rd St to New Hampshire.
New Hampshire thru Dupont Circle to New Hamp and R St (Mile 1)
Continue on New Hampshire pass Starbucks to 16th St
Turn left (north) on 16th St (stay on left side of 16th), just keep running passing many churches.
16th and Harvard (Mile 2)
16th and Arkansas (Mile 3)
16th and Colorado (Mile 4) Pass Tennis Stadium and left on Morrow Drive (4.2 Miles)
Follow Morrow past "Welcome to Rock Creek Park" and down long, long hill.
At bottom of hill turn left and then Right turn onto Beach Drive. (Mile 4.8)
Run out Beech Drive pass bathrooms on your right and picnic area on left. Come to bridge where beach drive goes over Rock Creek. (Mile 5.3)
Turn around and head back down Beach Drive. Pass Morrow Drive and continue direct down Beach Drive. Pass Park Ranger Station on your left. This portion is closed to vehicle traffic.
Arrive parking lot just north of Pierce Mill. Open to vehicles from here. (Mile 7)
Follow Rock Creek Trail back to Pierce Mill (Bathrooms), passing Zoo, and to GW (Mile 12)

-0.0 Depart K Bldg: Down G St to Va Ave to Crew Boat House to under Key Bridge and onto Crescent Trail
1.8 Just past 10 Mile Marker turn right thru culvert and up on Canal Rd and quick right onto Glover Archbold Trail.
2.5 Cross Reservoir Rd
3.0 Pass Sign "Whitehaven Trail" - leads to Bill and Hillary's House
3.6 Pass Sign "Wesley Trail"

6.8 Turn Right on Conn Ave and proceed to zoo. Run on LEFT side of Conn Ave.
8.0 Enter Main Entrance National Zoo - Head downhill thru zoo. Stop and see the PANDAS! Water stop at fountains and rest rooms.
8.5 Exit Zoo onto Rock Creek Parkway - turn right and follow paved Rock Creek Trail. Follow paved trail to right just before tunnel. Do NOT run thru tunnel!
11.5 Arrive Virginia Ave, pass Watergate.

C & O Canal and Mall

Bldg K down Va Ave, Waterfront to Key Bridge. Up to Tow Path. Out tow path and pass under Chain Bridge. After Chain Bridge run 3-4 more minutes and turn around. Return to Bldg K. (9 miles)
