You are reading this because you are at least considering doing your first marathon - or you are coming back for another one. The marathon is not to be taken lightly. You will have family, friends, co-workers and others who will say the body is not designed to run that far. You will be entering an arena where few venture. Less than .1% of the American population run a marathon. You will be joining a very elite company and you will experience a "victory" more timid souls will never know. The thrill of finishing your first marathon is something you will NEVER forget. It's special and will be marked by over five months of commitment and effort that will take your body and mind beyond anything you have done before.

You will not make the journey alone. You will be in good company with many others with the same goals, the same doubts and misgivings, and together you'll face the same challenges. GWRRC can provide you with a fun group of other runners to train with.

Who are we?
We are all volunteers, and thus we ask those who join our program to help out too. In order to keep the training program going, we must be a cooperative group, and be dedicated to training. Our goal is simply to promote the benefits of physical activity and a healthy life style in the Washington metro area. We wish to pass on our knowledge and passion for distance running to others.

What is this program, and who can join?
This program is 26-week training program that begins in May. It is open to ALL in the Washington metro area from 18 to seniors. Our runners include attorneys, hill staffers, diplomats, bankers, physicians, GWU students and faculty, businessmen and women, computer nerds, soccer moms, and a variety of others.

How can I register?
First, assuming your target is the Marathon Corps Marathon, you must register for the race on your own. (www.marinemarathon.com/theentry.php) Second, you must have a base level of fitness to enter the program. You need to be able to comfortably run 5 miles before we begin training. You need to be able to run three miles in under 40 minutes. This is the entry point, where we begin the marathon training. (A training schedule to prepare you to run 5 miles is at Training Schedules.)
