Mr. Fuerth was Vice
President Al Gore's National Security Adviser and served on the National
Security Council for eight years in the Clinton administration. In addition to
serving as the director of five U.S. binational commissions to Russia, Ukraine,
Egypt, South Africa, and Kazakhstan, Mr. Fuerth was the coordinator for
sanctions during the Balkans conflicts in the Clinton administration.
Richard Holbrooke, who negotiated the end of the war in the Balkans, said that
sanctions were very important in bringing Milosevic to the bargaining table.
