Abstract
A detailed history of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) conducted by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) provides insights about the effectiveness of this agency in stimulating innovative technologies that proved to be of great importance to the military and to the commercial economy. Today, based on its legacy of “success” DARPA is the subject of much attention regarding the technological and economic competitiveness of the United States. Richard Van Atta conducts analyses of defense-related technology policy issues for the Institute for Defense Analyses. These studies range from the impact of declining competitiveness in manufacturing technology on U.S. national security policy to technology security and export control. Current and recent studies under his direction include analyses of the transitioning of technology into application and of technology and industrial integration.
