Abstract
A cross-disciplinary review of the basic approach to systems (in particular educational, legal and economic systems) in England and the United States compared with Germany and Austria (representing Central Europe) shows striking differences; a rather dynamic and more process oriented Anglo-American approach based on single solutions versus a more static and hierarchical complex approach in Central Europe. The differentiation may be finally traced to differences in the structure of language. The paper relates the findings to the transformation process in Eastern Europe.
