International Travel Insurance and Assistance
GW continues to be concerned with your health, safety, and security
while you are traveling on behalf of the University, especially to an
international location. What would you do if you became ill, or were
involved in an accident, or a security related incident in a foreign
country? How would you deal with an emergency where language is a problem
and adequate standards of medical care cannot be guaranteed? What if
you were in a foreign country where the political situation was unstable
or quickly deteriorating?
The Office of Risk Management administers an International Travel Insurance
and Assistance Program. This Program provides insurance coverage and
travel assistance services for employees and students engaged in overseas
University-related travel, as set forth in the International
Travel Insurance Policy. The Program contracts the services of International
SOS for this coverage, which differs between students and employees.
The student coverage includes the following:
- Travel advice services;
- Security evacuations;
- Repatriation services;
- International SOS clinic access; and
- On-line information: country guides, travel security reports, vaccinations
and diseases, business and cultural etiquette
In addition to the above-mentioned areas, the employee coverage includes
the following:
- General liability insurance;
- Foreign voluntary workers compensation;
- Excess auto liability insurance; and
- Medical services.
If you are an employee and require insurance coverage not listed, please
contact Risk Management for additional
insurance information.
Who's Eligible?
As an ongoing commitment to our employees' and students' personal safety
and well being, the University provides the International SOS coverage
for all University full-time and part-time faculty, staff and students
while out of the country on University-related travel.
Please note that this program is for University related travel only
and not for leisure travel. Any student or employee planning to stay
for personal travel may purchase the International SOS coverage at a
reduced rate, and at their own expense. Please contact International
SOS directly for additional information.
Does this Include Health Insurance?
International SOS is not health insurance. University travelers should
maintain their own personal health insurance and determine how their
health insurance program applies to medical care prior to traveling.
Renting an Automobile?
If you are an employee and will be renting an automobile while abroad,
please contact Risk Management for additional insurance information.
