Majors and Minors
Both the Minor and the Major in Spanish require students to take some designated courses and also allow them to choose advanced courses from a varied group of offerings. The Spanish Minor provides students with a solid linguistic base and a literary and cultural literacy comparable to that of a well-educated native. The Major in Spanish provides students with advanced skills in conversation, reading and writing and with a critical knowledge and understanding of authors and works that have shaped a period, a movement or a genre, or that represent the multiplicity of Hispanic voices at the beginning of the 21st Century. Students typically minor in Spanish in order to enhance their chosen Major or to strengthen their bid for admission to graduate programs in International Relations, International Business, History, English, Law or Medicine. Our Major gives students a strong preparation to pursue graduate studies in Spanish and is also a frequent first or second major field in combination with English, French, History, International Relations, Latin American Studies, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, and other Majors in the Natural and Social Sciences. Either a Minor or a Major in Spanish will increase the opportunities of employment of students majoring in professional fields like Tourism or Human Services.
