10.30.09: UPCOMING GERMAN EXHIBIT PART OF 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL

On November 9, 1989, a peaceful revolution brought down the Berlin Wall. 20 years later, celebrate the movement that brought freedom to Eastern Europe. This even includes a month-long exhibit of photographs by Bruce Blundell, as well as a film series and symposium. 09.09.09: EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: THE POLITICS OF REMEMBRANCE IN THE NEW BERLIN - SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2009

After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 the German parliament in Bonn voted for Berlin as the new capital for East and West Germany (1991).The interwoven layers of past and present have turned Berlin into a vast case study on how to deal with memory and history in a democratic society. In their lecture, conceptual artists Renata Stih and Frieder Schnock will examine memorials and the interaction of politics, history, the media, architecture, art and the public sphere.

07.01.09: RSGLL WELCOMES NEW CHAIR AND DEPUTY CHAIR

The department is pleased to welcome our new Chair and Deputy Chair. Our new Chair is Sergio Waisman, Associate Professor of Spanish. Prof. Waisman received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. His research interests are in 19th and 20th century Latin American literature, theory, and translation.

The Deputy Chair is Masha Belenky, Associate Professor of French. Prof. Belenky received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2002. She researches 19th century French literature and culture, the novel and narrative theory, cultural studies, and the intellectual history of emotions.

06.08.09: FRENCH PROGRAM NOW USING ELECTRONIC WAITLIST FOR LEVELS 1-10

For students needing to get into closed sections of FREN 001, 002, 003, 004, 009, and 010, RGSLL is now using an electronic waitlist form. You can find the new waitlist here. NOTE: This waitlist is not connected to the registration system. Signing up for the waitlist does not automatically add you into a closed section if a space opens up. It merely lets us keep track of the students needing to get into closed sections for possible consideration of adding new sections or registering students above cap (if allowed by the fire code). For more information about RGSLL's waitlist policies, please see our closed classes page here.

Please also note that the electronic waitlist is only for French 1-10. If you wish to sign up for a waitlist for a higher level or a different language, please e-mail rgsll@gwu.edu to be placed on the appropriate waitlist.

03.27.09: GERMAN PROGRAM OFFERS NEW SUMMER COURSE ON ADVANCED READING

The German program is pleased to announce GER 101, Readings in Contemporary Germany, a new summer online course in German. It's the perfect way to review and solidify your basic knowledge of German, increase your vocabulary, focus on current events, and push your reading skills to the next level... all from the comfort of home.

GER 101 is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students who enroll in this course can satisfy the reading portion of their TOOL exam (CCAS) or the Exit Exam (ESIA)!

When: May 18 - June 27 (first summer session). Where: online through the George Washington University. Prerequisite: Second-year German (GER 004 or GER 006) or equivalent.
