GER 001 - First Year German I (1st Year)
First half of beginning course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 002 - First Year German II (1st Year)
Second half of beginning course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Prerequisite: GER 001.

GER 003 - Second Year German I (2nd Year)
First half of the 2nd-year course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Prerequisite: GER 002.

GER 004 - Second Year German II (2nd Year)
Second half of the 2nd-year course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Prerequisite: GER 003.

GER 005 - Intensive Basic German I (1st Year)
Beginning intensive course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Equivalent to GER 001 and 002. Recommended for German majors. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 006 - Intensive Basic German II (2nd Year)
Continuining intensive course in fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing German. Equivalent to GER 003 and 004. Recommended for German majors. Prerequisite: GER 002 or 005.

GER 009 - Intermediate German I (3rd Year)
Practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the intermediate level. Prerequisite: GER 004 or 006.

GER 010 - Intermediate German II (3rd Year)
Practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the intermediate level. Prerequisite: GER 009.

GER 109 - Introduction to German Studies I (4th Year)
An introduction to approaches, concepts, and analytical tools for study in the field, complemented by advanced practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Prerequisite: GER 010.

GER 110 - Introduction to German Studies II (4th Year)
Continuing the introduction to approaches, concepts, and analytical tools for study in the field, complemented by advanced practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Prerequisite: GER 109.

GER 111 - Business German (4th Year)
Introductory course preparing students to function in business-related communicative situations, with an emphasis on language skills necessary for work in areas such as marketing and finance. Prerequisites: GER 010.

GER 091 - Introduction to German Literature I
Survey of German literature 1700–1830, including the Enlightenment through Sturm und Drang, classicism, and romanticism. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 092 - Introduction to German Literature II
Survey of German literature 1830–1950, including Young Germany through realism, naturalism, expressionism, and the literature of the Third Reich years (exile literature and inner emigration). Prerequisite: GER 091.

GER 161 - German Culture I
The central problems, issues, and events that have shaped the development of German culture from antiquity to the present. Emphasis on products and processes of German culture in social, historical, and political contexts. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 162 - German Culture II
The central problems, issues, and events that have shaped the development of German culture from antiquity to the present. Emphasis on products and processes of German culture in social, historical, and political contexts. Prerequisite: GER 161.

GER 165 - 20th-Century German Literature
Survey of the major trends in the works by modernist, exile, postwar, and contemporary German writers such as Kafka, Thomas Mann, Duerrenmatt, and Grass. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 171 - The Age of Goethe
Readings of major works of Weimar classicism in their historical and cultural context. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 172 - From Romanticism to Idealism
Readings in German romanticism, literature of the “young Germany” movement (Heine), and realism (Fontane, Storm). There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 173 - From Naturalism to Expressionism
Study of various literary movements between 1880 and 1914: naturalism, impressionism, symbolism, and expressionism (Hauptmann, Hesse, Thomas Mann, Kafka). There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 174 - Inside and Outside the Third Reich
Analysis of literary developments inside the Nazi state (propaganda literature, literature of resistance, and inner immigration) and the literature of exile (Seghers, Remarque). There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 175 - Literature of Two Germanies
Evolution of East and West German literatures after World War II, their separate developments and ultimate unification. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 181 - History of German Cinema
A detailed historical and cultural survey of German cinema from the first moving picture devices (1895) to the expressionistic classics of the 1920s and the collapse of the Nazi film industry in 1945. All films are subtitled. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 182 - The Fairy Tale from the Grimms to Disney
Survey of the changing form, structure, and meaning of the fairy tale in its traditional contexts, modern transformations and critical interpretations, with readings by 19th-century European collectors and 20th-century critics. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 183 - Berlin Before and After the Wall
The political, social, and cultural developments in Berlin from 1945 to the present through a reading of selected primary documents, historical analyses, and short literary texts. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 184 - German Thought
An overview of German ideas about culture, religion, society, and politics from the 16th century to the present. Readings from such writers as Luther, Leibniz, Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Weber, Heidegger, Adorno, and Habermas. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 185 - Literary Voices and the Fascist Experience
A survey of writers anticipating as well as reflecting on Germany's plunge into the totalitarian abyss of fascist politics, including H. Mann, Kafka, Juenger, Brecht, Werfel, Thomas Mann, Lenz, Frisch, Duerrenmatt, and various forms of Holocaust poetry. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 186 - German Women Writers of the 19th and 20th Centuries
The changing literary and social roles of German women of the 19th and 20th centuries, examined through selected readings of women's literary production and culture. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 195 - Special Topics in German Studies
Directed study of German language, literature, or culture. May be repeated for credit. Students must obtain chair's approval and arrange for supervision by an appropriate member of the department. There are no prerequisites for this course.

GER 197 - Honors Senior Thesis I
The first semester of the senior honors thesis on a topic related to German language, literature, or culture. Required of and open only to honors candidates in the department. Prerequisites: major in German Language and Literature and senior standing.

GER 198 - Honors Senior Thesis II
The second semester of the senior honors thesis on a topic related to German language, literature, or culture. Required of and open only to honors candidates in the department. Prerequisite: GER 197.
