WELCOME
Faculty in the Department of Romance, German & Slavic Languages & Literatures at The George Washington University carry out research in a wide range of literary, cultural, and linguistic scholarly fields. We offer dozens of language, culture, and literature courses in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish to hundreds of students every semester. Most of our courses are taught in the original language; some are in English. Our teaching fosters critical thinking, reading, speaking, and writing within and across cultures and histories.
Sergio Waisman, Chair
Masha Belenky, Deputy Chair
NOTICE: ADVISING DURING THE SUMMER SESSION AND THE WINTER HOLIDAYS
Please be advised that faculty are not available for advising during the winter holidays for any of our language programs. Advising will resume at the start of the spring semester.
During the summer session, French and Spanish advising for majors and minors, transfer credit, study abroad, and placement exams is limited, depending on whether or not the advisors are teaching during the summer. You may have to wait until the start of the fall semester for these advising issues, so please plan accordingly. There is no advising for German, Italian, Portuguese, or Russian during the summer session.
NOTICE: ARE THE CLASSES YOU WANT FULL? (UPDATED FOR SPRING 2010 REGISTRATION)
Here at RGSLL we do our best to accomodate as many students as possible into our language, literature, and film courses. However, there will invariably be students every semester - particularly freshmen and sophomores - who discover that the courses they need are full. To find out everything you should know about our department's policies for this situation, please click here.
UPDATE: For the spring registration period, we will be using on online waitlist system for all French and Spanish courses levels 001 - 010. You can find all the details by clicking here.
NOTICE: DO YOU NEED A LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM OR A WAIVER EXAM?
If you have ever studied French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, you need to take a placement exam to continue taking the language at GW. This also applies to heritage speakers - those who speak the language at home but have never had any formal training. For complete information on how to register for the placement exam, click here.
If you are in the Elliott School of International Affairs, you have the option of taking a waiver exam to fulfill your language requirement. Waiver exams for French, Italian and Spanish are offered once each semester (in March and November). The next waiver exam for these languages will be offered in February 2010. You must register in advance to take the waiver exam by e-mailing the department at rgsll@gwu.edu.
Waiver exams in German and Russian are offered on an as needed basis throughout the semester. To register for the German exam, please contact Margaret Gonglewski. To register for the Russian exam, please contact Richard Robin.
Due to Elliott School policy, our language placement exams CANNOT be used as a waiver exam. If you are in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, you CANNOT take the waiver exam to waive your foreign language and culture GCR requirement.
