Dr. Peter Rollberg, Chair

The Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Languages and Literatures at GW is the university's largest language and literature department. With over eighty faculty teaching more than one hundred and fifty courses each semester, we provide language instruction to thousands of students every year, opening doors to study abroad opportunities across the globe. We also offer a wide variety of literature and film courses, some in the target language and some in English.

The mission of the Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Languages and Literatures is:

NOTICE: SPANISH TRANSFER CREDIT ADVISING

If you have a courses to be transferred from study abroad or from other US institutions, please be advised that Prof. Serrano-Ripoll will only be available for consultation until the last class day of each semester. She will not be available for transfer credit approval over the summer or winter breaks.

NOTICE: DO YOU NEED A LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM?

If you have ever studied French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, you need to take a placement exam to continue taking the language at GW. This also applies to heritage speakers - those who speak the language at home but have never had any formal training. For complete information on how to register for the placement exam, click here.

NOTICE: ARE THE CLASSES YOU WANT FULL?

Here at RGSLL we do our best to accomodate as many students as possible into our language, literature, and film courses. However, there will invariably be students every semester - particularly freshmen and sophomores - who discover that the courses they need are full. To find out everything you should know about our department's policies for this situation, please click here.
