Expectations During an Incident

Structural Integrity of a Building >>

If the incident involves an event that has caused your building to shake, partially collapse, or a nearby building to collapse in such a way that you question the structural integrity of your building:

During shaking:

  • Drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building;
  • Stay away from windows including interior windows;
  • Stay away from bookcases, light fixtures, or other furniture that could fall on you;
  • Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway;
  • Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to leave;
  • After the shaking stops, evacuate the building according to evacuation guidance.
