Program Wide Conferences:
(Attendance is expected by all residents stationed at all sites who are not on call*)
  1. George Washington University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds: This conference is held weekly from 7:15 to 8:15am in Ross Hall, room 101. Attendees also include full time and voluntary faculty from all three sites. Speakers include department faculty, GW faculty from other departments, and visiting faculty. Topics covered include traditional obstetrics and gynecology as well as relevant subjects from the fields of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, etc. There is a monthly Morbidity and Mortality conference at which residents present cases for discussion and appropriate faculty experts from outside departments are invited.
  2. Barracuda Rounds, Journal Club and Didactic Conferences: These conferences are held every other week from 2:00-5:00pm in the GW Hospital Auditorium. Occasionally conferences are held at Fairfax or Holy Cross Hospitals instead. The first hour is devoted to either a case discussion or Journal Club, the second two hours are for traditional lectures. The range of topics are covered over four years with rotating lectures. Residents are given "self study" reading assignments and question sets to turn in to a faculty advisor on the off weeks.
  3. Resident Grand Rounds: Monthly conference presented by 3rd year Resident involving original research or comprehensive literature review on a selected topic in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Evaluation done by faculty and chief resident. Visiting Professor invited for expert commentary. Location rotates monthly.
  4. Visiting Professor Case Conference: Monthly interactive conference with an invited Visiting Professor. Case presentations and discussions coordinated by Administrative Chief Resident at the designated site. Location rotates monthly.

*Other residents may be excused only at the discretion of the program director and administrative chief resident. First year residents on off-service rotations are invited but also excused.

Conferences at George Washington University Hospital

  1. Gynecology Conference: Weekly conference (Monday 4:30-5:30pm) attended by all residents, medical students and gynecology faculty. Weekly topics designated and coordinated by Gynecology Chief Resident under the direction of Gynecology attending physician of the month. Rotating schedule of topics including benign gynecology, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology and journal review.
    Faculty: Dr. Jeffery Lin and Gyn Attending of the month.
  2. Obstetrics Conference: Weekly conference (Thursday 7:00-8:00am) attended by all residents and medical students. Weekly topics designated and coordinated by Antepartum Chief Resident under the direction of Dr. Parviainen. Schedule of topics including basic science, maternal conditions, fetal conditions, journal review and quality assurance case management.

  3. High Risk Conference: Weekly conference (Tuesday, 8:00-9:00 am) attended by the MFM faculty, Antepartum Chief Resident and 1st year Resident to discuss both ambulatory and inpatients on the High Risk Service. This multidisciplinary conference is also attended by neonatology and endocrinology faculty and residents, and members of other departments when indicated. Formal presentation of the patients by the residents is followed by discussion and formulation of treatment plans. Residents are expected to prepare brief presentations on topics chosen by the MFM attending.

Conferences at Fairfax Hospital

  1. FairfaxHospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds: This conference is held weekly from 8:00 to 9:00am in the Physicians Conference Center. Attendees include many of the members of the voluntary faculty who cover the residents as well as Kaiser physicians and private community doctors. Speakers include ob/gyn faculty members, Fairfax faculty from other departments, and visiting speakers. Topics covered include traditional obstetrics and gynecology as well as relevant subjects from the fields of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Anesthesiology, etc. There is a monthly Morbidity and Mortality conference at which residents present cases for discussion and appropriate faculty experts from outside departments are invited.
  2. Antepartum Conferences: These conferences are held every Monday afternoon in the clinic classroom and are attended by all residents and a member of the maternal fetal medicine faculty. A resident prepares a maternal fetal medicine subject selected in concert with the perinatologists. Presentations range from chapter review to journal club discussion. Once during each block the second year resident on the ultrasound rotation will give a power point presentation on an obstetrical ultrasound topic. This presentation is a comprehensive review and discussion developed with the guidance of one of the perinatologists.
  3. Reproductive Endocrinology Lecture: This conference is led by Dr. John Gordon, a reproductive endocrinologist in private practice near Fairfax Hospital. It is held every Monday morning at 7:15 in the seventh floor conference room. All available residents are expected to attend. It is an interactive didactic session covering fundamentals of reproductive endocrinology such as physiology of the menstrual cycle and the synthesis of steroid sex hormones.
  4. Gynecology Conference: This conference is held every other Thursday morning at 7:15 AM in the seventh floor conference room and led by Dr. Mecklenberg, the department chairman. During this session a resident presents an interesting patient who was either seen in either the emergency room or clinic, or underwent surgery during the past week. There is a thorough discussion of the work-up, differential diagnoses, physical examination, and management of these women from the perspective of an experienced faculty member. This conference alternates with a chapter review from the textbook Comprehensive Gynecology led by Dr. Michael Ross, a member of the attending faculty at Fairfax Hospital.
  5. Statistics Conference: This is held every first and third Friday morning of the month at 7:15 AM in the seventh floor conference room. For this conference, a senior resident selects a recently published article from a scientific journal, presents the topic to the residents and then leads a discussion of the findings. Also present is Dr. John Sheridan, INOVA Fairfax's biostatistician, who helps explain the statistics used to analyze the data presented and to critically assess the validity of the results.

Conferences Holy Cross Hospital

  1. Antepartum Conference: Residents and Medical Students meet with staff Perinatologists to discuss in-house service patients as well as patients of interest enrolled at the hospital's clinic. The history and physical is presented as well as hospital course and current management plan. Discussion then centers around future management, discharge or delivery planning with main focuses on current standards of care and recent evidence based articles to support such an approach. Occasionally a new, particularly noteworthy perinatology article is presented with an evaluation of methods and statistics as well as a focus on how the evidence presented could impact patient care.
  2. Tumor Board: The third Tuesday of the month is a tumor board sponsored by the Cancer Center at Holy Cross Hospital. Gynecologic cancer cases are selected by Gynecologic Oncologists for particular interest or for need for peer directed advice concerning future treatment regimens. The history and physical, as well as the operative and postoperative courses are presented by residents. Radiologic studies are reviewed when pertinent, and pathology slides of the case with histology commentary are provided by gynecologic pathologists. This conference is attended by the gynecologic oncologists practicing at the hospital as well as medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and gynecologic pathologists.
  3. Holy Cross Hospital Grand Rounds: Residents and Medical Students attend departmental Grand Rounds given by a staff attending or a visiting physician. The topic is usually a current obstetric or gynecologic point of interest containing new data or treatment options in the spirit of continuing medical education. Once a month a departmental Morbidity and Mortality is presented. Cases are generated from service patients and alternate months between obstetrics and gynecology. Cases are presented by residents involved in the case including history and physical as well as hospital course with particular attention paid to the complication or point of interest of the case. This is followed by a brief discussion of available literature surrounding the topic as well as a brief question and answer session where questions and comments from attending staff are addressed.

First Year Resident Core Lecture Series

The goal of this lecture series is to introduce new first year residents to the basics of obstetrics and gynecology through an intensive 8-week program. Residents also have an opportunity to meet the faculty and learn about faculty interests and research opportunities. All first year residents are expected to attend and are excused from clinical responsibilities during this time. The schedule of topics and reading assignments is provided at orientation. Quizzes and informal seminar format as well as traditional lectures are used. A sample schedule is below.

Senior Resident Conferences

Each year PGY3 residents are selected to attend the ASRM and ACOG meetings. These residents are chosen by the faculty and program director/associate program director based on educational merit. The trips are generously funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

All senior residents are permitted time and financial support to attend an academic conference. This conference must be approved in advance for educational merit by the program director/associate program director. Permission for leave must also be granted by the administrative chief resident and faculty supervisor at the site that the resident will be stationed at during the absence. Selections and approvals are made on a "first-come first-served" basis. Residents are permitted to miss no more than 3 consecutive work days to attend a conference and no more than 5 days total. Any resident who has a paper/abstract to present at a conference will be granted time and financial support to attend.
