Research Hiring
The information provided here relates to the requirements and procedures for the effective recruitment and hiring of project personnel on sponsored research programs. To the extent these statements relating to the requirements and procedures for the recruitment and hiring of personnel for a research project at GW conflict with information originating from Human Resources, the latter supersedes.

Paying Students from Sponsored Programs
This section describes methods for supporting graduate and undergraduate students in conjunction with work on sponsored programs.
Traveling for Sponsored Programs
Prior to taking a trip funded under a sponsored program, obtain approval from the appropriate RSC. This review is to assure that the trip is allowable: that there is funding available, that it is related to the purpose of the grant, that it occurs within the period of the award, and that the person traveling is associated in with the program.

Paying Independent Contractors
Independent Contractor is a person or business entity which provides goods or services to another organization or entity under terms specified in an agreement. Independent Contractors are not employees of the University and may not use GW resources to perform their services.

Independent Contractors are ancillary to the actual research being performed under a sponsored project but are necessary to meet the overall objectives of GW's award from the prime sponsor. They must meet the criteria established by the IRS.

Issuing and Monitoring Subawards
The OVPR Handbook provides details on the necessary steps to establish subawards on GW projects and to monitor subrecipients once awarded.
