Background

Professor Goldgeier has held appointments at Stanford and Cornell Universities, the Brookings Institution, the Library of Congress, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Council on Foreign Relations,the Hoover Institution, the State Department and the National Security Council staff.

From 2001-2005, Prof. Goldgeier directed George Washington University's Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies. He specializes in international security politics and foreign policy decision making. His most recent book is America Between the Wars: From 11/9 to 9/11 (co-authored with Derek Chollet), which was named "A Best Book of 2008" by Slate and "A Favorite Book of 2008" by the Daily Beast. His other books are Power and Purpose: U.S. Policy toward Russia after the Cold War (co-authored with Michael McFaul), which received the 2004 Georgetown University Lepgold Book Prize in international relations; Not Whether But When: The U.S. Decision to Enlarge NATO; and Leadership Style and Soviet Foreign Policy, winner of the 1995 Edgar S. Furniss Book Award in national and international security. He has published widely on international affairs in journals and newspapers that include Foreign Affairs, Survival, International Organization, Security Studies, The Washington Quarterly, The National Interest, Foreign Policy, Policy Review, Perspectives on Politics, The Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun, The San Jose Mercury News, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times.

He received his B.A. from Harvard and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
