Background

Professor Bowie's research focuses on comparative political economy, development, and Southeast Asia. He is author of The Politics of Open Economies: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand (with Danny Unger), and Crossing the Industrial Divide: State, Society, and the Politics of Economic Transformation in Malaysia and of articles and chapters on state-sponsored economic development in Malaysia.

He was an official international election observer in Palu, Central Sulawesi, during the June 7, 1999, national election in Indonesia. He is a frequent radio commentator on political developments in Indonesia (NPR, CBC Radio-Canada, Voice of America, BBC World Service). Dr. Bowie's current research focuses on the emergence of civil society organizations in the post-New Order era and, in particular, changes in the roles that business associations have played since the ouster of President Soeharto.
