District of Columbia Alpha was organized at Columbian University, Washington, DC, in 1868, and for over thirty years maintained a prosperous and successful career. From 1881 to 1884, the District of Columbia Alpha was the Grand Chapter of the Fraternity, carrying to all Phi Psi's honor and leadership. However in 1889, the entire active membership enlisted in the Spanish-American War, and the Executive Council, finding no active members in attendance at the university, recalled the charter. Its total membership was 189.
The university has since been recognized under the direction of Congress as The George Washington University. In 1889, a new group of men was recruited and the chapter was reestablished on October 20, 1990. Today, the DC Alpha Chapter flourishes on GW's campus. The current chapter is proud and honored to continue the legacy of DC Alpha.
