The Philosophy Department offers programs of study leading to the B.A. in Philosophy, the M.A. in Public Policy, and the combined B.A./M.A in Philosophy and Public Policy. Many courses in the department are also accessible to general-interest students.

The study of philosophy trains and disciplines the mind: it teaches one to think clearly and incisively, to synthesize ideas into a coherent understanding of the "Big Picture," and to express one's thoughts in lucid, well-organized writing. In a world in which learning is lifelong and the clear communication of ideas is critical, philosophy is the preeminent discipline for teaching one how to reason and to convey ideas to others.
