General Information

The Department of Philosophy offers programs of study leading to the B.A. in Philosophy and the M.A. in Public Policy with a concentration in Philosophy and Social Policy. Students pursuing the B.A. may choose between two distinct courses of study: the traditional major and the public affairs option. Students pursuing the M.A. may fashion their course of study to focus on a particular area of policy, such as health policy or urban problems.

Because of the relatively small size of many Philosophy classes, students can work closely with their professors. Philosophy courses offer the kind of individualized attention that is not feasible in programs and classes teeming with students.

The Department sponsors a number of lectures and talks each year, including the Elton and Thacher Lectures which are delivered by distinguished philosophers of international standing.

The undergraduate Colonial Philosophy Club organizes a series of events each year, including debates, talks, and informal gatherings with students and faculty. This club is open to any student with an interest in the  study of philosophy; contact the department office for details.
