Policies & Regulations

Prospective and admitted non-degree students are urged to acquaint themselves with the academic and financial policies and regulations outlined in the University Bulletin prior to registering for classes. You should be certain about what you wish to take before you complete your registration. For example: do you have the necessary prerequisites, do you need the permission of the professor or department, do you wish to audit rather than take for credit, will you lose a percentage of your tuition for credits reduced once the semester has begun? To correct such situations after the semester has begun can be time consuming and costly.

Courses and Credits

Students are eligible to take most courses in any school except the School of Medicine and Health Science andthe Law School; students may also not take courses that are restricted to degree candidates. Please contact the relevant academic department to request information regarding restricted courses. Students who take courses on a credit/no credit basis or audit, must have the professor's permission to do so. Students must complete a Registration Transaction Form (RTF) and obtain the professor's signature.

Non-degree students may take a maximum of 18 undergraduate level credits or 12 graduate level credits in any given semester. Credits beyond the above must be approved in advance by the Director of the Office of University Students.

Immunization Policy

Please note DC Immunization law: ALL students under the age of 26, regardless of program of study, part-time or full-time, degree or non-degree status, are required by DC law to provide documentation of immunity. Click here for further information:
