The Paradox of Post Heroic Leadership: Gender Matters

Joyce K. Fletcher, Ph.D.

October 26, 2004

About the Speaker:

Dr. Fletcher observes that post-heroic models of leadership obscure the powerful social structures that constrain or facilitate leadership effectiveness. She argues that under-examined gender/power dynamics create paradoxical situations for practitioners because of the way "doing gender," "doing power" and "doing leadership" intersect. In this talk she explores these paradoxes, discusses why theories of leadership that fail to take these dynamics into account are difficult to put into practice, and what we, as theorists and practitioners, might do about it.
