WHO ARE WE?

The Occupational Medicine Consultation Clinic is the principal clinical activity of the Division of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology of the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, The George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC). The Occupational Medicine Clinic is a member clinic in good standing of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics. The Occupational Medicine Consultation Clinic is a primary teaching site for the training program in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and is often host to residents in occupational medicine from other area institutions.

The clinic is operated by the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA), a non-profit corporation. The principal clinical facility for the MFA is the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC). The Occupational Medicine Consultation Clinic holds its weekly clinic in the ACC, on 3 South.

Consultative services in occupational medicine include the evaluation of difficult problems in occupational medicine (such as chemical exposure and chronic musculoskeletal disorders), disability evaluation, fitness to work, accomadation, and periodic health examinations. Some of these evaluations include independent medical examinations for the purpose of workers' compensation or litigation. These are specialized clinical services, in our terminology. The GWUMC often provide immediate care for occupational disorders and refer them to the Occupational Medicine Consultation Clinic for follow-up.

Consulting services are also provided by faculty of the Division of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology. These are non-clinical services which deal with issues such as case management, health care and policy consulting, hazard evaluation and risk assessment, and medicological services.

The clinical services of the GWUMC constitute the major center for medical care in downtown and western area District of Columbia and draws patients from a wide catchment area in metropolitan Washington, DC, including Virginia and Maryland. The GWUMC comprises: The George Washington University Hospital, the Ambulatory Care Center, the George Washingtion Health Plan, and two health professional schools, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and the School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS). The Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) is an independent practice plan associated with GWUMC.
