The Division of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology of the Department of Medicine is closely associated with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health of the School of Public Health and Health Services, The George Washington University Medical Center. Through this connection, we can arrange for service related to epidemiology, injury prevention, toxicological investigation and industrial hygiene.

GW's Division of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology is a member of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC) and adheres to the Code of Ethics of Occupational Medicine in promoting health and welfare of workers.

Evaluation, Treatment and Advice Concerning Work or Environmental-Related Illnesses and Injuries

Occupational medicine specialists determine the diagnosis of work-related illnesses and injuries including skin disorders, musculoskeletal problems, respiratory disorders, hearing loss, and a variety of toxic effects. Recommendations include rehabilitation and job or exposure modification if necessary. We provide comprehensive and thorough reports, addressing specific questions, with legal documentation as needed.

Comprehensive Pre-placement and Periodic Health Evaluations

We perform general and OSHA-mandated exams and appropriate tests to monitor and evaluate work-related exposure. These include audiometer for hearing loss, spirometry for for respiratory problems, medical surveillance for asbestos, lead and other exposures, respirator fit testing, and test to measure level and the effects of toxic substances. These exams or tests can be performed at our practice site or other locations.

Information/Recommendation on Potentially Hazardous Workplace Exposures

Our staff specialists draw upon personal expertise and our comprehencsive, up-to-date information files to provide information and advice on all types of potential workplace hazards. Educational materials and programs are also available.

Follow-up to Help Identify and Prevent Job and Health Safety Problems

We perform questionnaire surveys, health data analyses, and other tests to trace problems and recommend ways to minimize and eliminate hazards.
