Information for Teacher, Counselor, and Administrator Licensure in
DC
The Office
of the State Superintendent of Education for the District of Columbia has
instituted the following procedure for Colleges and Universities in the District
of Columbia to process teacher licenses for candidates who complete our
approved programs. Beginning with fall
2002, OLE is responsible for processing all teacher licenses for the graduates
from our approved programs who apply for a teaching license in DC. Students who are graduating should be advised
to contact OLE to obtain the application form. Programs that have cohort groups
can elect to have their students processed as a group.

Guidelines for
processing a DC teaching license for initial and added endorsements:
Step One: Student or
Program Coordinator obtains DC licensure form(s) from OLE for candidates
completing their approved program
Step Two: Student fills out appropriate
section of form
Student
signs/dates the form and then attaches the following:
Current
transcript with final grades for all licensure courses (unofficial GWeb transcript acceptable
– write your name and GWid or
All Praxis
I&II test scores (these scores are not reported to our
office – we need unofficial copies directly from the student)
Official Program
plan (with any changes noted –
copies are fine)
Unofficial copies
of transcripts from institutions other than GW for any deficiencies noted in
program plan.
A $50.00 money order (no personal checks accepted!) made payable to ‘DC Treasurer’ to cover the application fee for EACH content area.
A criminal arrest
history record report – instructions attached – we must
receive the original report.
NOTE ABOUT LICENSING FEE: The Infant/Early Childhood Special Education
Program leads to licensure in Early Childhood Education and an advanced endorsement in Early Childhood Special
Education. These are two separate
licenses costing $50.00 each. In order
to receive licensure in EC SpEd, candidates must also
receive the EC license. Thus, the cost
is $100.00 total.
The Bilingual SPED program leads to licensure in ESL
(K-12), Non-Categorical SpEd (K-12) and an advanced
endorsement in Bilingual SpEd (K-12). These are three separate licenses costing
$50.00 each. In order to receive the
Bilingual SpEd license, candidates must first receive
the Non-Categorical license. Thus, the
cost is $150.00 total, unless the ESL license is not desirable; in which case,
the total cost is $100.00.
Step Three: All teacher
license applicants must order their FBI background check prior to being
licensed. Information is provided with
the application packet.
Step Four: Student returns form with ALL documentation to OLE to
the address below.

Step Five: OLE fills out
the rest of the application, including test scores, and checks the
documentation provided. OLE obtains the
signature of the Dean and the seal of the Registrar. The deadlines on the front of this page are
the dates by which we MUST receive
all of your information. We will send
the processed license applications to DC approximately 10 days later and it
takes about 6-8 weeks for you to receive your license(s) in the mail from DCPS.
It is strongly recommended that students obtain a DC
license before applying for an initial
license with another state.
