The purposes of the 700 Series are the promotion
of experimentation in teaching methods and course content, provision
of timely opportunities for students to study topical themes relating
to current events in the disciplines and in world affairs, and encouragement
of multi-departmental and inter-school cooperative teaching on interdisciplinary
themes. In addition to these well-established aims, GW may employ
the Series for opportunities for international exchange, and inclusion
of the results of international scholarship into the curriculum.

Proposing a 700 Series
course
700 Series courses must be proposed and receive approval for each
semester offered. At least three semesters prior to the course offering,
a Proposal
Form is distributed to all deans, directors, and department
chairs. Using the proposal form, the faculty member secures approval
from the chairs of authorizing departments and then forwards the
form to the appropriate deans' offices for signature. The signed
copy is then forwarded to Academic Planning and Assessment at 2121
"Eye" Street, NW, Suite 602.
700 Series courses must be proposed by full-time
faculty, although part-time faculty may participate. A modest budget
is maintained to encourage full participation in the Series; however,
this budget does not cover instructional costs for teaching 700
Series courses.

Deadlines for Submission
Summer session: submit by preceding October 15
Fall semester: submit by preceding December 1
Spring semester: submit preceding April 15
A course may be repeated once; the proposal process
is identical for a second offering of the same course. To be offered
again after its second inclusion in the 700 Series, the course must
become part of GW's regular curriculum.

Enhancing International
Exchange through the 700 Series
Faculty members who take part in international exchange through
a GW agreement or through such programs as the Fulbright may propose
a 700 Series course prior to the beginning of the period to be served
abroad. These proposals are subject to the same deadlines and processes
as other 700 Series courses. As soon as feasible after the faculty
member returns, the approved 700 Series course will be offered.
International faculty who visit GW as senior scholars
may also propose courses for the Series, with the support of their
chairs and deans. A stipend will be available for up to three visitors.
Chairs should request the support with approval from the dean to
the Executive Director of Academic Planning and Assessment. Participation
will be limited to teaching faculty on official exchanges, and the
courses may not be offered during the summer semester.
These grants are intended to enhance the possibility
of international faculty exchange - and the influx of international
perspectives into the curriculum - by defraying the cost of travel
and living expenses for scholars. They will be offered on a first-come,
first-serve basis, provided the proposals have been approved by
the appropriate chairs and deans.
