The nonprofit sector is experiencing burgeoning
growth. In the United States, it now includes more than 1.3 million organizations,
receiving more than $200 billion in philanthropic support each year, and
employing one in ten Americans. In recent years, privatization of institutions
and services previously supported by governments has lead to the expansion
of the nonprofit sector in nations around the world and an increased role
for international non-governmental organizations. This growth has created
a need for trained nonprofit managers and for research focused on the
unique challenges of managing nonprofit organizations.
The George Washington University Nonprofit Management Initiative is a
collaborative undertaking that brings together faculty representing various
disciplines, programs, schools, and specialties related to education,
research and service in the nonprofit sector.
