FORMER U.N. DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL LOUISE FRECHETTE OFFERS INSIDER PERSPECTIVE ON HOW TO FIX THE UNITED NATION'S PROBLEMS

Louise Frechette, a distinguished fellow at The Center for International Governance Innovation, will address the topic "Inside the U.N.: What Works, What Doesn't, and How to Fix It" as part of The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs' Distinguished Women in International Affairs series.

BACKGROUND:

Since joining The Center for International Governance Innovation in May 2006, Frechette is leading a three-year research project on nuclear energy futures: implications and options for global governance. Previously, she served for eight years as the first U.N. deputy secretary-general, appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. She also served as Canada's ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay, ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, associate deputy minister of finance, and deputy minister of national defense.
