EVENT:          Please join The George Washington University as it celebrates the inauguration of its 16th president, Steven Knapp, with a week-long series of activities. GW's inaugural week highlights the university's many contributions and academic accomplishments throughout its 186-year history. The week includes three theme days - In and of Washington, Research and Discovery, and A Lifelong and Worldwide Community, - during which students, faculty, administrators, alumni, partners, and neighbors will participate in seminars, symposia, and performances. The culminating event, the formal inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th president, will take place on Friday, Nov. 16.

 

Free tickets are now available for the inauguration at TicketMaster on the Ground Floor of the Marvin Center (800 21st St., NW).

RSVP:             Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public, and online registration may be required. Please visit http://inauguration.gwu.edu for more information.

 

PRESS:           All events are open to the media. Please RSVP to Adela de la Torre at (202) 994-6424 or adelita@gwu.edu. Press passes will be made available beginning Nov. 8. For events held Nov. 12 - 15, public parking is available at the University Garage on 23rd and H streets, NW. On Nov. 16th, additional parking will be available at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. A free shuttle is available from the Kennedy Center to the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro.

Monday, Nov. 12 - "From President to President"

 

9 a.m. - Noon

"From President to President: A Gift from George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens"

The George Washington University Mount Vernon Campus; 2100 Foxhall Road, NW, Washington, D.C.

As a prelude to the inauguration, James Rees, executive director of George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, will give Steven and Diane Robinson Knapp two rare Hog Island sheep from the Mount Vernon estate.

 

 

Tuesday, Nov. 13 - GW: In and Of Washington

8:30 - 10 a.m.

Foggy Bottom/West End and Kent/Palisades Community Breakfast Reception with President Knapp

A short program will precede an informal discussion between President Knapp and a wide array of community stakeholders.

Center for Excellence in Public Leadership Luncheon

The luncheon celebrates the longstanding relationship between The George Washington University, the GW Center for Excellence in Public Leadership, and the District of Columbia government. The center also will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week's Annual Hunger Banquet

President Knapp will participate in the hunger banquet, an educational simulation promoting awareness of global and local hunger. Participants are randomly assigned socio-economic profiles and are provided a meal accordingly.

Join the GW Alumni Association as it officially welcomes President Knapp to the university and alumni community.

Featuring Sen. Mike Enzie (R-Wyo.), B.A. '66, students and alumni will be paired up at lunch to compare GW experiences and discuss career aspirations.

Student Performance Revue

Students, alumni, faculty, and staff will join together to celebrate the inauguration of President Knapp. Following a reception, student performance groups including music, dance, and theater will perform.

Inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th President

The inauguration will bring together GW's global community - trustees, faculty, students, staff, neighbors, partners, and alumni - as well as distinguished visitors to celebrate the installation of Steven Knapp as the 16th president in the 186-year history of The George Washington University.

Where There's a Will, There's a Way: George Washington's Vision

Last opportunity to view pages of George Washington's will bequeathing shares of stock in the Potomac Company for the establishment of a university in the nation's capital. The will is on display through 3 p.m.

An opportunity for GW students, faculty, and staff to meet President Knapp and congratulate him on his inauguration.

 

 

Saturday, Nov. 17 - Day of Service

7:30 - 11 a.m.

Help the Homeless Walk-a-thon

University Yard; H Street between 20th and 21st streets, NW

Teams comprising residents of individual residence halls will compete for prizes. The Office of Community Service also will put together teams of alumni, off-campus students, staff, and other members of the GW community.

 

2 - 6 p.m.

Foggy Bottom Clean-up

Kogan Plaza; H Street between 21st and 22nd streets, NW

The GW community joins with its Foggy Bottom and West End neighbors for a neighborhood clean-up, a GW Student Association-organized, semi-annual event.

 

The George Washington University will celebrate the inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th president Nov. 12 to Nov. 17. The week-long series of events will celebrate GW history and its vision, as well as the inauguration of President Steven Knapp on Nov. 16.
