BACKGROUND:

GW's graduate certificate in IT for Justice and Public Safety provides a focused skill set for professionals in these fields who want to lend their IT technical expertise to fight crime and terrorism. The 15-credit certificate teaches students how to apply computer science technology to meet the needs of data sharing, interoperability, data management, and security in the field of law enforcement and justice. The certificate may be applied towards a master's degree in computer science, telecommunications, and computers, or engineering management.

Scharf is a nationally recognized expert on criminal justice training, technology, and education, and founded the Center for Society, Law, and Justice originally at the University of New Orleans. His keynote address will examine the relationship between investment in criminal justice technologies and the control of murder rates in U.S cities. Using New Orleans as a case study on rising murder rates, he will explore the effect investment in IT infrastructure may have in the reversal of this trend. Scharf also will profile several information technology initiatives that have successfully resulted in a reduction of violent crime in other metropolitan areas.
