GW'S DAY OF SERVICE BRIDGES CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY IN CELEBRATION OF THE INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT STEVEN KNAPP
NOV. 17, 2007

WASHINGTON - In celebration of the inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th president, the university will host a day of service on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007.  Events include the Help the Homeless Walk-a-Thon, Foggy Bottom Clean-Up, and a food drive.  The day of service will demonstrate the importance of civic engagement.

"During inauguration week, the day of service gives students an opportunity to give back to the community we call home," said Corey Barenbrugge, vice president of community affairs for the GW Student Association.  "D.C. isn't just a place where we go to school.  We want to help the city reach its highest potential, and activities like the day of service give students an excellent opportunity to do so."

Robert A. Chernak, senior vice president for student and academic support services and associate professor of higher education administration, said, "The day of service allows the student body to show its commitment to making a difference in our city.  As a university with a strong history of service, the students continue to actively engage in making Foggy Bottom an excellent neighborhood.  The day also articulates President Steven Knapp's commitment to community, a focal point of our inaugural activities."

The Help the Homeless Walk-a-Thon will begin with a breakfast for participants at 7:30 a.m. in the University Yard and continue until 11 a.m.  The walk will conclude the events of the Fannie Mae Foundation's 20th annual Help the Homeless program.  Teams comprising students who live on campus will compete for prizes for the best represented GW residence halls.  Teams of alumni, off-campus students, staff, and other members of the GW community may register with the Office of Community Service by calling (202) 994-5493 or online at http://gwired.gwu.edu/sac/OCS.

The GW and Foggy Bottom/West End communities will join together for the Foggy Bottom Clean-Up from 2 - 6 p.m. at Kogan Plaza.  The GW Student Association organizes this semi-annual clean-up.

The Office of Community Service sponsors the campus-wide food drive, which will continue throughout the week as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.  Donations for the D.C. Central Kitchen, Capital Area Food Bank, and Foggy Bottom Food Pantry can be made at the Marvin Center, Academic Center, Rice Hall, Ivory Tower, and Thurston, New, City, and Somers halls collection points, Nov. 12 - Nov. 16 and at Kogan Plaza during the Foggy Bottom Clean-Up, Nov. 17, from 2 - 6 p.m.

The university has an extensive array of community service programs in all eight wards of Washington.  In the past year alone, GW students contributed more than 55,000 hours of community service in the D.C. metropolitan area, and the university is consistently ranked among the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers and Teach for America corps members.

The George Washington University will celebrate the inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th president with a week-long series of academic and enrichment activities culminating in the President's formal installation on Friday, Nov. 16.  For more information, please visit http://inauguration.gwu.edu or call the Inaugural Office at (202) 994-1600.
