GW COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE NEW MASTER?S AND GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS IN PARALEGAL STUDIES

WASHINGTON - The George Washington University College of Professional Studies announced today the establishment of a paralegal studies graduate certificate and master's degree program. The program, which launches in January 2007, will be the only credit-bearing, post-baccalaureate paralegal program in Washington, D.C. The master's in paralegal studies and graduate certificate in paralegal studies offer students the opportunity to specialize in government law, intellectual property law, or international law.

"In our city and at this time, few professions are growing faster or changing more quickly than the paralegal profession," said Roger Whitaker, dean of GW's College of Professional Studies.  "We are delighted to offer a new and innovative graduate program designed to meet the emerging needs of this important profession."

Among the many distinctive features are an association with the GW Law School, a legal technology curriculum, a commitment to community service and leadership, and a legal specialty model. In addition to a high quality education designed in accordance with American Bar Association guidelines, the graduate certificate and master's degree program also will afford students the opportunity to perform community service and assume positions of leadership in the legal community.  Students can work in legal clinics and pro bono programs, and perform community service through the University and local organizations.

"GW Law School has a reputation for producing the nation's top lawyers, so it is fitting that it be complemented by a robust paralegal program," said Toni Marsh, program director.  "The paralegal profession is constantly in flux, and GW can help potential and current paralegals stay at the forefront of their profession."

GW's College of Professional Studies offers both full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate programs that continue the educational experience for those in emerging and rapidly changing professions.  Programs draw on the expertise of GW faculty and outside partners - professional associations, community organizations, consulting enterprises, and industry leaders - to present innovative, forward-looking curricula with immediate relevance in today's workplaces.

Located four blocks from the White House, The George Washington University was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Today, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. The University offers comprehensive programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree programs in medicine, law, engineering, education, business, and international affairs. Each year, GW enrolls a diverse population of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 120 countries.
