AWARD-WINNING GW CULTURAL AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAMMING NOW BROADCAST ON WASHINGTON POST RADIO

The Kalb Report, From the Nation's Capital, and Beyond Category
Airing Weekends on 1500 AM and 107.7 FM

WASHINGTON -- The George Washington University's award-winning cultural and public affairs radio programming now airs locally on Washington Post Radio (1500 AM and 107.7 FM) each Saturday from 8 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. The programs include The Kalb Report, From the Nation's Capital, and Beyond Category.

"Washington Post Radio is presenting the most substantive and creative new format in decades," said GW Vice President for Communications Michael Freedman, who oversees the University's broadcast partnerships and productions and serves as executive producer for radio programming. "It's the perfect home for our weekly programs, which serve to educate and enlighten in areas ranging from press and public policy to the performing and visual arts, American history, and Washington's hidden treasures."

"At Washington Post Radio we like to say there is always more to the story," said Greg Tantum, Washington Post Radio program director. "The variety, intelligence, depth, and breadth of these programs delivers on that promise."

The Kalb Report, moderated by the distinguished journalist/scholar Marvin Kalb, is a periodic forum series jointly produced by GW, Harvard, and The National Press Club. The series is underwritten by a grant from The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. The partnership has produced 51 forums over 12 years with guests including Walter Cronkite, Roger Ailes, Bob Schieffer, Ted Koppel, Dan Rather, Judith Miller, Bob Woodward, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Thomas Friedman, Madeleine Albright, Al Franken, and Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. The Kalb Report series was inspired by GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg while Marvin Kalb served as a visiting professor at the University in 1994.

From the Nation's Capital is hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Sam Litzinger, who now serves as a mid-day host for Washington Post Radio. This one-hour, weekly program offers creative audio tours of Washington's museums, monuments, memorials, and hidden treasures and features interviews with authors, artists, curators, and special guests to the nation's capital.

Beyond Category, hosted by Dick Golden, is a partnership of GW and Exploring the Arts, singer Tony Bennett's Foundation for Education and the Arts. Each week through music and interviews, this program profiles composers and artists whose lives have made a difference in our world. Subjects include Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Fred Astaire, Jack Benny, Nat King Cole, and Harold Arlen. Many programs also include commentary from Tony Bennett.

From the Nation's Capital, Beyond Category, and a third GW-produced program, American Jazz, all air weekly on XM Satellite Radio in addition to Washington Post Radio. The Kalb Report airs on XM Satellite Radio, as well as WHUT Channel 32 Public Television in Washington, D.C., New England Cable News, Oklahoma Educational Television, and WXEL Public Television in South Florida.

GW's broadcast portfolio also includes the University's unprecedented partnership with CNN, which has resulted in over 775 programs produced on campus. GW's Communications Division also advises the University's student radio station WRGW. GW students serve as interns and volunteers on the University's various broadcast productions and partnerships.

Washington Post Radio is a collaboration between WTOP Radio and The Washington Post. The station, which debuted in March of 2006, features in-depth news and analysis, as well as play-by-play sports of the Washington Nationals, GW Men's Basketball, and Navy Athletics. Both WTOP and Washington Post Radio are owned by Bonneville International.
