Down to Earth: Geology Professor Stays Grounded in His Studies

The serene calmness of the Greenland fjord, a beautiful juxtaposition of lush grasses and ancient icy glaciers, tucked between jutting cliffs, is disturbed only by the hoarse hum of a motor cutting through the cold glassy-still water. George Stephens and his companion maneuver their small rubber boat closer to a gigantic glacier that is luring the two geologists to explore the cavernous ice tunnel at its base. American Sign Language (ASL) is one of the most used languages in the United States. Yet communications between the ASL-fluent and those unfamiliar with the deaf community’s chosen parlance are a constant dilemma. It’s a problem that GW doctoral candidate Jose Hernandez-Rebollar has devoted three years of his life to solving. READ

A Slice of Hollywood Visits SMPA Class

Six creative voices from Hollywood were guests in a School of Media and Public Affairs class on Tuesday, describing to students their lives as writers and producers and their mission as a group to bring ethics to the forefront of the entertainment industry. This GW stop for ACTOne was part of a larger itinerary that included visits to Capitol Hill.

Governor of Virginia, entrepreneur and GW graduate Mark R. Warner will deliver the keynote address to more than 5,400 graduates of the Class of 2003 at GW’s Commencement on the Ellipse, Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m. Also receiving honorary degrees will be GW graduate and former U.S. Senator Jean Carnahan; Billy Taylor, renowned jazz pianist, composer, conductor, lecturer and author; Sheldon S. Cohen, former Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service; and Madeleine Jacobs, editor-in-chief of Chemical & Engineering News. READ
