First Responder

 

First Responder Training Center To Be Established On GW’s Virginia Campus

GW will spearhead an effort to create a first responder training center on its Virginia Campus with funding included in the FY ’03 spending bill approved by Congress. The $5 million appropriation will establish the Response to Emergencies and Disasters Institute, or READI, to train firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement and other healthcare providers in an integrated approach to major emergencies including terrorism. Kennerly H. Digges, director of biomechanics and safety at the Federal Highway Administration/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National Crash Analysis Center at GW, will direct the project aimed at further improving the safety of today’s automobiles, with specific attention to child safety. First in a four-part series on homeland security issues, this half-day seminar on Friday examined what the bioterrorist threat is to the United States and questioned the country’s readiness. The panel discussions were followed by a keynote address by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Joseph Lieberman, ranking minority member of the Senate Government Relations Committee.

D.C. City Council Considers Bill to Enhance UPD

The D.C. City Council is considering a bill that would grant all city university police departments concurrent jurisdiction authority, giving the 10 institutions the ability to enter agreements with the Metropolitan Police Department to more effectively patrol streets and sidewalks in and around campus boundaries.
