Students in the Clinical Health Sciences major must successfully complete 120 credit hours of study, composed of four components listed below. Full descriptions of the health sciences core courses and the courses in the major are provided by clicking on the course name.

Please note that this program is open only to currently certified, active-duty U.S. Navy Independent Duty Corpsmen:

  • Surface Force IDC — NEC 8425
  • Submarine Force IDC — NEC 8402
  • Deep Sea Diving IDC — NEC 8494
  • Fleet Marine Force Recon IDC — NEC 8403
  • Special Operations IDC — NEC 8491
 
Degree Requirements

    1. Advanced Standing for IDC "C" School (60 credit hours)
      Upon registration in the program, 60 credit hours of advanced standing for successful completion of IDC training are applied towards the degree.

    2. General Education Requirements (30 credit hours)
      General education course work must include:
      •  6 hours of English composition
      •  4 hours of biological sciences
      •  8 hours of mathematics, science, or statistics
      •  12 hours of humanities/social sciences

      These requirements may be fulfilled by taking course work at community colleges or other accredited institutions of higher education. A limited number of credit hours may be granted for work completed through nontraditional methods, such as military service schools or CLEP or DANTES examinations.

      Examples of acceptable coursework for mathematics,science, or statistics are college level algebra or higher, physical sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, physics, earth sciences, astronomy), or statistics (HSci 115 — Introductory Biostatistics for Health Science Professional is an acceptable course). (Note: Individuals interested in preparing for application to a physician assistant program will need at least 8-16 hours of chemistry. Check with the PA programs under consideration for specific requirements.)

      Examples of course work that would satisfy humanities/social science requirements include: American civilization, anthropology, art, classics, creative writing, economics, foreign language, geography and regional science, history, humanities, literature, journalism, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, social sciences, speech and drama, and sociology. Course work in the physical sciences or technical or professional fields (e.g., business, engineering, and computer science) cannot be accepted towards humanities/social sciences requirements.

    3. Core Courses (15 credit hours)
      A selected 15 credit hours of course work from the list below provides a core knowledge base and competency and are required of all candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences:

    4. Courses in the Major (15 credit hours)
      These courses must be taken through GW and include:

    Nine credits of the courses in the major (HSci 130-133) are related to clinical experiences and can (but are not required to) be completed during the IDC recertification process. HSci 110 is offer—ed via distance education and HSci 190 is an independent study to be completed towards the end of the degree in consultation with the course instructor.

Admission Requirements


To be considered for admission, applicants must present at least 60 credits of college work (this includes credit awarded for military training). The applicant must be a currently certified Independent Duty Corpsman.

Tuition and Fees


Tuition and fees for the Clinical Health Sciences program for the academic year 2006-2007 are:

  • Tuition — $297.00 per credit hour
  • Registration Fee — $35.00 per semester
  • Application Fee — $60.00 (one time fee submitted with application, waived for a graduate of another GW degree program).
  • Graduation Fee — $100.00 (payable on graduation)
