Thank you for your interest in performance study at GW.

Individual lessons provide opportunities for students to develop the technical and artistic skills needed to function in the musical community of the GW Department of Music. Our select ensembles provide an advanced experience parallel to the students' lesson instruction and guide our students to a deeper intellectual and cultural understanding of the act of making music.

We will accept into private study our majors, minors, scholarship students and other students who have the skills and desire to participate in the department's select ensembles or demonstrate the potential to do so. We hope you will be a part of our musical life here at GW.

New Students:

The department will meet all students new to performance study during placement fairs for each semester.

Placement Fairs will be held on Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th.

Currently, Placement Fair interest sheets are hanging outside the department office. However, if you are interested in performance study, please email the department at gwmusic@gwu.edu with your name and instrument and we will be happy to add you to the prospective student list. An email will be sent out in November to remind those on the list of the upcoming Placement Fair.

Sign up sheets for the Fair will be posted outside of the music department office in Phillips Hall B-144 the last week of August.

Placement fair audition information:

Music majors, minors, scholarship students and other students with the skills appropriate to the department’s select ensembles, or who demonstrate the potential to acquire them, are eligible for private lessons.

Eligibility and placement for students new to private performance study will be determined at a placement fair held during each semester.

For the Placement Fair:

1. Bring your instrument and be prepared to play. For singers, warm-up before your time.
2. Bring a short prepared piece if you have one. (Or a short selection from a larger work)
3. Be prepared to play scales if asked.
4. There will be an easy sight-reading exercise.

* If you have experience on your instrument or in singing, but haven’t had extensive experience in reading or repertoire as noted above, please come and meet us. Your ensemble and/or playing experience are important factors in our placement consideration.

The GW Department of Music has 3 levels of instruction available for undergraduate performance study.

0 level – all students will take at least one semester and no more than 3 semesters of performance study on one instrument at this level.
1 credit = ½ hour lesson
2 credits=1 hour lesson

100 level – private instruction that shows advancement beyond the 0-level of study. Students are also required to participate in a Department of Music select ensemble.
2 credits = 1 hour lesson

185 level – for the most advanced students, public performance is required.
3 credits = 1 hour lesson

Returning Students:

Returning students must manually register at Music Department and will follow the same priority protocol set up by the Registrar's Office.
